The Purito Andorra cycling event marked its 10th anniversary on Sunday with 2,160 participants, relocating the finish line for the first time from Cortals d’Encamp to Plaça de Sant Miquel in the parish centre.
Organised by former professional cyclist Joaquim “Purito” Rodríguez, the gran fondo offered three routes—25km, 75km, and 116km—starting at 8am from Sant Julià de Lòria. Cyclists faced signature Andorran ascents such as La Rabassa-la Peguera, Coll de la Gallina, Alt de la Comella, Collada de Beixalís, and Coll d’Ordino, plus sections through Cortals to Pardines and Engolasters. All distances included a fresh gravel “sterrato” stretch at Pardines for added off-road appeal.
Encamp’s menor conseller, Xavier Fernàndez, welcomed the new finish as a major boost for locals, businesses, and eateries, with the goal of enlivening the parish centre. He described it as a highly positive shift that “is here to stay” and thanked the organisers and volunteers.
Rodríguez highlighted the benefits for Encamp residents, who can now view arrivals nearby, as well as for riders themselves. He committed to keeping the event going “for many years.”
The downtown endpoint drew more spectators and eased access for families, while simplifying attendance at the post-ride pasta party in Encamp’s Complex Esportiu i Sociocultural. Spanish former pro cyclist Samu Sánchez, the 2008 Beijing Olympic road race champion, attended as a special guest.
Saturday’s Purito Kids event at Parc de l’Ossa saw about 100 children aged 5-14 navigate a bike obstacle course, with the parish handing out goody bags featuring Encamp promotions and sponsor items.
