Andorra's VPC rugby team marked their first home match of the season with a resounding 80-14 victory over RC Ponent at the Estadi Nacional on Saturday, running in twelve tries in a fourth-round fixture in Group B of Spain's División de Honor B.
The tricolors, coached by Santi Lugones, were dominant from the opening minute, scoring seven tries before half-time to lead 47-7 at the break. Francesc-Xavier Ferret opened the scoring in the second minute, with Gastón González converting, and Julià Pintat and Mariano Fauda added further tries as Andorra raced to a 21-0 lead inside eleven minutes.
RC Ponent briefly responded through a José Joaquín Gil try converted by Tomás Tronca on 17 minutes, but the visitors could not contain Andorra's attack. Carlos Mauricio Fernández, Ricardo Quintino, Adrià Pintat and captain Hugo Llata all crossed before the interval, with González landing six of the seven first-half conversions.
Guillem Badia added two more tries early in the second half, in the 47th and 49th minutes, while Izan Almeyda and substitute Ian Granyena also scored. José María Gómez touched down for Andorra's twelfth try on 72 minutes, this time converted by Almeyda. Mariano Carballo claimed a late consolation try for Ponent, converted by Tronca, but the result was long settled.
The win lifts VPC to 16 points from four matches, with three victories and one defeat, and includes an offensive bonus point for scoring twelve tries. It also steadies the team after a narrow 33-31 loss away to BUC Barcelona in their previous league outing, which had ended a two-match winning run.
The match followed a week without club competition due to the international break, during which Andorra's national rugby team lost to Israel, also at the Estadi Nacional.
The club's women's side were also scheduled to play on Saturday, travelling to Sitges for an 18:30 kick-off against the combined Hospitalet-Sitges-Salou team.
