Andorran Skier Roger Puig DQ'd from Paralympic Alpine Combined After Super-G Miss
Roger Puig disqualified from Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics alpine combined after missing a gate due to a pole mishap in super-G.
Key Points
- Puig's pole caught on jump, causing imbalance, loss of focus, and gate miss in super-G LW9-2 category.
- Only 17/26 starters finished super-G; Puig aimed to gain positions for slalom but DNF'd.
- Career bests: 5th in downhill (1:19.72, +1.93s to Cuche), 11th in super-G (1:15.11, +2.99s).
- Upcoming: giant slalom Friday, slalom Sunday; Swiss Cuche wins downhill and super-G gold.
Andorran para-alpine skier Roger Puig was disqualified from the alpine combined event at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics after failing to complete the super-G leg on Tuesday.
Competing in the standing LW9-2 category on the Olympia delle Tofane course in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Puig encountered trouble in the second half of his run. A small imbalance on a jump caused one pole to catch and cross over, disrupting his rhythm. He continued with the pole dangling but lost concentration. On the next jump, he over-jumped and missed a gate, ending his race and disqualifying him from the slalom leg. Only 17 of 26 starters finished the super-G.
Puig told RTVA he had pushed aggressively to climb positions ahead of the slalom but lost speed and focus after the pole issue and earlier skids. "I went for it a bit more today. I skidded twice, lost a lot of speed on one and a pole on the other. That threw me off, and on the next jump I went too straight and ended up out," he said. Despite the setback, he viewed his Paralympics debut positively, highlighting his fifth place in downhill—Andorra's first Winter Paralympic diploma—and 11th in Sunday's super-G as career bests.
In the downhill on Saturday, Puig clocked 1:19.72, 1.93 seconds behind Swiss winner Robin Cuche. Starting with bib 9 of 33 in super-G, he recorded 1:15.11 for 11th, 2.99 seconds off Cuche's gold. He was eighth at the first timing point (+0.28), ninth at the second (+0.89), 12th at the third (+1.99), and finished 11th. Lower-section trajectory errors prevented a top-10 finish, though his team praised the competitive pace and experience in the high-speed event.
Cuche defended his downhill title with super-G gold, followed by American Patrick Halgren in silver and Frenchman Jules Segers in bronze.
With speed events concluded, Puig rests before giant slalom on Friday and slalom on Sunday.
