Australian ex-ProTour sprinter serves partial prison term for alcohol-related offenses

A former professional cyclist, originally from Australia and now residing in Andorra, has completed another partial prison sentence over the weekend for offences linked to his alleged alcohol problems.

The rider, a sprint specialist who once competed at the top level of the ProTour circuit, served several weeks of nightly detention at La Comella prison. Sources describe this as neither his first nor second such conviction, with alcohol consistently cited as a factor in his repeated legal troubles.

His most notable incident occurred in October 2021 in La Massana, where he allegedly chased his then-partner down a street while under the influence. The woman, who had reportedly already been assaulted by him, sought help along Avinguda del Través. A truck driver intervened, allowing her to escape in his vehicle, after which police arrested the cyclist on charges of gender-based violence.

Further incidents followed, involving different individuals but sharing the same common thread of alcohol involvement, according to consulted sources. They express regret that a high-level athlete could reach such extremes.

The cyclist arrived in Andorra like many peers, drawn by its high-altitude training terrain, scenic routes for undisturbed preparation, and favourable tax regime. Early in his career, standout performances earned him spots in two or three elite ProTour teams, where he raced at the pinnacle for around a decade.

His professional trajectory declined sharply around the time of the 2021 incident. No records show further elite competition, though he has remained in Andorra and provided occasional advice to other cycling teams.
