The RN-20 road linking Andorra to France will reopen to traffic on Monday, 9 March 2026, more than seven weeks ahead of the initial three-month closure estimate, following stabilisation work on a landslide-affected slope.
Prefect of Ariège Hervé Brabant announced that recent interventions have restored pre-incident safety conditions along the route between Ax-les-Thermes and Mérens-les-Vals, where a rockfall struck overnight from 30 to 31 January. Provisional measures included purging unstable sections and securing two elements totalling 100 cubic metres that were supporting a larger 500-cubic-metre block above. Stability studies on the main block proved positive, enabling the early reopening despite the need for further medium-term work.
The road will operate in both directions with enhanced safety protocols, including motion sensors on the slope linked to traffic lights upstream. Any detected movement will trigger intermittent red lights to halt vehicles immediately, a system already in use on other French mountain roads prone to rockfalls or avalanches. Authorities stressed strict compliance: drivers must stop at flashing red signals and avoid halting in the risk zone.
Andorra's Head of Government Xavier Espot welcomed the news after discussions with French officials, including Occitanie's prefect. He confirmed technical reports support safe circulation under prior conditions, with activations expected only in exceptional cases. Espot noted definitive repairs, projected for 12 to 18 months, will require future closures coordinated with Andorra during low season to minimise economic disruption, particularly for Pas de la Casa's ski sector.
Encamp's senior consul Laura Mas hailed the accelerated timeline as a "very welcome" development that restores normality for residents and businesses after a challenging February. The parish will maintain aid applications opening 1 March for those hit by the closure, while planning a Pas de la Casa Economic and Social Council meeting to propose off-peak dates for upcoming works with French authorities.
Additional slope risk reassessments and studies continue, with any necessary further closures aimed at limiting user impacts.
