A lorry crash on the N-145 near Anserall has left its driver in serious condition after the vehicle overturned, blocking access to Andorra on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3.59pm at kilometre 1.5 in Valls de Valira, shortly after the Anserall tunnel and in the direction of Andorra. The lorry, registered in the Principat, collided with a car before overturning, with its trailer coming to rest across the full width of the road and the cab sustaining major damage. Another car also reported damage in the crash.
Emergency services responded swiftly, including Catalan firefighters, the Medical Emergency System with a medicalised helicopter and ambulances, and Andorran teams that provided a fire truck and ambulance for support. Responders extricated the trapped driver, whose legs were pinned inside the cab, before airlifting him from the road to Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition. The crash happened around 4.40pm according to initial emergency assessments.
The road closed completely in both directions from shortly after 3.59pm, causing severe disruptions from La Seu d'Urgell to the scene and hindering entry into Andorra, with vehicles turning back. Tailbacks reached over seven kilometres towards La Seu d'Urgell, extending to the border, and five kilometres towards Andorra. A partial lane opened by 4.45pm, with full traffic restored by 6.23pm.
Officials urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternatives during the extended closures and queues, which lasted more than half an hour at peak. Emergency crews worked to stabilise the site, remove vehicles and clear the road. The cause remains under investigation.
