Andorra to Decide Air Nostrum Contract in July Amid Flight Disruptions

The Andorran government will decide in July on the future of its contract with Air Nostrum for flights from Andorra-la Seu Airport to Madrid and Palma, following cancellations and diversions in May.

State Secretary for Energy Transition, Transport and Mobility David Forné announced the timeline on Tuesday. He said the executive is reviewing the operator's performance ahead of the contract's end later this year. After raising concerns with Air Nostrum over the May disruptions—"we weren't understanding what was happening with these cancellations and diversions"—the government agreed to monitor operations through June and July.

Forné noted recent improvements, with flights to Madrid on Friday, Palma on Saturday, and Palma again on Tuesday proceeding without issues over the weekend. A face-to-face meeting is set for July to determine next steps, with all options under consideration, including contacts with other aviation firms. "There are options," he said, though the preference remains to continue with Air Nostrum, which has supported the service for years. The aim is to ensure reliable service for users.

Forné praised Andorra-la Seu Airport's performance, nearing 20,000 annual flights with growing economic activity and expanding facilities. Despite its mountain location and inherent challenges, the infrastructure has received significant backing from the government and the Generalitat.

In parallel, the national heliport at La Caubella is entering its final construction phase. Forné confirmed on Wednesday that inauguration is scheduled for 22 June, following a site meeting with the concessionaire. The facility will centralise all helicopter operations, including international and national flights, government services, and emergencies currently handled from La Massana. "Andorra deserves a top-tier heliport," Forné said, calling it a historic milestone that strengthens external connectivity.
