Andorra Forecasts 1M+ Vehicle Entries This Summer with Border Traffic Plans

Andorra's Mobility department predicts steady tourism traffic with targeted measures at borders and enhanced night bus services to handle peak festival crowds and daily highs.

Key Points

  • Over 1,032,000 vehicles expected from July 6 to Sept 13, matching last year's 1,031,393.
  • August peaks at 470,000 entries, up to 17,000 daily; 290,000 from Spain, 180,000 from France.
  • Dual lanes activate at Spanish border for peak hours: inbound 10am-2:30pm, outbound 4pm-8pm.
  • Night buses boost capacity for festivals, handling up to 2,000 passengers as last year.

Andorra's Mobility department expects stable inbound vehicle traffic this summer, forecasting more than one million entries between July 6 and September 13, in line with last year's total of 1,031,393 vehicles.

The projection stands at 1,032,000 vehicles overall. August will carry the heaviest load with 470,000 entries and daily peaks up to 17,000. Most will cross the Spanish border (290,000), followed by 180,000 via France. July anticipates 390,000 vehicles—255,000 from Spain and 135,000 from France—with highs of 14,000 daily. September's first half should see around 172,000 to 232,000 entries as volumes decline.

Carles Miquel, director of Energy and Transport, presented the plans on Tuesday, noting that current trends show "basic stability." To manage peaks proactively, a special setup activates from next Monday at the Spanish border on the Runer river. Mornings will open dual inbound lanes northbound along Avinguda Francesc Cairat in Sant Julià de Lòria. Afternoons will dedicate dual lanes southbound from the Comella roundabout to Margineda for outbound flow.

Inbound rushes are forecast from 10am to 2:30pm from Spain and 9am to 12:30pm from France. Outbound peaks run 4pm to 8pm toward Spain and 2pm to 7pm toward France.

The measures, repeated from last year, rely on coordination with Andorran and neighboring security forces. Miquel emphasized "total coordination" at the Spanish border with no issues, triggered as required by the National Traffic Centre.

Night bus services will also gain extra capacity for upcoming major festivals. The service typically handles 500 to 800 passengers but can reach 1,000 to 1,500 during events, as seen last year when it peaked at 2,000 users during Sant Julià de Lòria's festivities.
