Police have opened proceedings against the driver suspected of causing the fatal crash on the CG-2 near Encamp, charging him with manslaughter by serious negligence after a 74-year-old woman from Sant Julià de Lòria died in the three-vehicle collision on Saturday evening.
Four days after the incident, the two most seriously injured—the suspect and the victim's daughter—have left intensive care at Nostra Senyora de Meritxell hospital and moved to regular wards, hospital officials confirmed. Both continue to recover favourably.
The daughter was driving the Nissan Micra with her mother aboard when the crash occurred around 6:23pm amid heavy rain in the Valira Nova area. She underwent emergency surgery that evening and has progressed steadily. The 36-year-old local resident, operating a Cupra with Andorran plates, first struck a French-registered Peugeot 208 before hitting the Micra. Though initially appearing less affected, tests revealed significant injuries requiring intensive care; his condition has since improved markedly.
The Peugeot's two occupants received emergency treatment and were discharged without serious injuries. Investigators believe the driver's vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane.
The victim, a well-known former restaurant owner in her parish, suffered cardiorespiratory arrest from the collision's force. Emergency teams attempted on-site resuscitation, but efforts failed to revive her.
The driver, whose blood alcohol tested at 1.72 g/l, faces potential detention upon hospital discharge. Police have not released further investigation details amid ongoing judicial proceedings.
The response involved police, five fire crews, and Servei Andorrà d’Atenció Sanitària units, leading to major traffic disruptions on the wet road.
