Catalan police have initiated criminal proceedings against a 39-year-old Andorran driver caught travelling at 173 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on the L-313 road near Torrefeta i Florejacs in the Segarra region.
Mossos d’Esquadra officers recorded the offence at kilometre 19.5 during a routine speed check around 8:37pm on Monday. The radar captured the Andorran-registered vehicle exceeding the limit by 103 km/h—more than double the permitted speed. Agents opened a case for a suspected road safety crime but did not detain the man on the spot. He must appear before the duty investigating court in Cervera when summoned, with a judge to decide on any penalties.
The case emerged amid ongoing Mossos speed enforcement efforts across Catalan roads to address risky driving.
This follows a comparable incident last Friday, 28 August, when officers halted another Andorran vehicle at 180 km/h in a 90 km/h section of the N-420 in Batea, Terra Alta, at kilometre 790.4. That stop, part of a safety operation linked to the Gran Premi d’Alcanyís motorcycle Grand Prix weekend, also led to criminal charges for a serious traffic violation.
No details have been disclosed on potential fines or further information about either driver.
