Andorra's Mobility Department has launched a five-day Easter traffic operation, expecting around 66,000 vehicles to enter the country amid rising holiday traffic.
The operation started on Wednesday, with an initial uptick in vehicles already noticeable, according to Daniel Boneta, head of the Mobility Area. He forecast the heaviest influxes for Thursday and Friday, with daily peaks exceeding 12,000 vehicles, extending through Monday. Most arrivals—up to 47,700—are anticipated at the Spain-Andorra border crossing, driven by differing holiday schedules in Spanish autonomous communities, where some celebrate on Thursday and others, like Catalonia, on Monday.
Boneta highlighted strong ski resort activity as a major factor, with snow depths higher than in recent years and optimistic hotel bookings. The overlap of Easter with the ski season's end will concentrate traffic in the higher parishes, such as Canillo and La Massana, before spilling into the central valley.
These estimates align with winter season projections and typical Easter volumes, following a post-Covid surge that has since stabilized.
To manage congestion, the department urged residents to plan trips ahead and avoid peak hours: mornings from 9:30 to 14:30 and evenings from 16:00 to 22:00. Entry complications may arise from 8:00-9:00, and exits from 16:00 onward. Double lanes will operate at the border, Avinguda Francesc Cairat, and afternoons from La Comella to Margineda. Additional measures could deploy in Canillo, La Massana, or the central valley if needed.
Mobility will coordinate with all communes and police from Andorra, Spain, and France for smoother flow.
