Andorra la Vella council has started urban improvement works this week at Prada Motxilla and Baixada del Molí to boost road safety, pedestrian pathways, cycling infrastructure, and comfort in busy zones.
Councillor for Public Services, Environment and Natural Heritage Jordi Cabanes explained that the initiatives encourage more walking and cycling alongside better vehicle-pedestrian interactions. Prada Motxilla, close to Lycée Comte de Foix, will gain expanded garden spaces, broader walkways, a segregated bike path, and adjusted traffic patterns to handle rush-hour volumes safely. The phased rollout, spanning roughly two months, avoids school disruptions and keeps traffic and access flowing.
On Baixada del Molí, from numbers 21 to 37 near Pavelló Toni Martí and Estadi Nacional, upgrades include wider sidewalks, fresh surfacing, enhanced lighting, speed reduction measures, a bike lane, and road redesigns. A new public square by Pavelló Toni Martí will introduce planting, benches, and trees for a relaxed setting during sports events. This 18-week effort expects no road blocks or access problems.
Remodelling of Plaça Bartomeu Rebés Duran starts Monday, 9 February, and will take about four months. The council seeks to add greenery, favour foot traffic, and revitalise this vital parish centre. Cònsol Major Sergi González described it as gaining a greener, more inviting area at a high-use junction. Works coincide with FEDA's underground transformer station project, enabling combined operations to reduce disturbances.
The square will close to general use during construction, but two side passages will maintain pedestrian and vehicle movement, connecting to Plaça del Poble and Plaça Vinyes. Upgrades feature planted areas, new paving, street furniture, lighting, benches, a fountain, and utility network renewals. Vehicles shift to the parking ramp edge, clearing the core for people. Terrace layouts adjust to expand open space, smooth business-pedestrian movement, and match Avinguda Meritxell's style for cohesive city aesthetics. González stressed continuous upgrades to high-traffic central spots.
