Andorra la Vella Launches Urban Beautification Projects at Three Key Sites
Council initiates works at Prada Motxilla and Baixada del Molí for safer pedestrian and bike areas, plus remodelation of Plaça Bartomeu Rebés Duran.
Key Points
- Prada Motxilla: New landscaping, trees, wider sidewalks, bike lane, reorganized traffic near school (2 months).
- Baixada del Molí: Expanded sidewalks, lighting, bike lane, new square with benches near sports venues (18 weeks).
- Plaça Bartomeu Rebés Duran: Greener redesign, fountain, pedestrian priority, aligned with Avinguda Meritxell (4 months).
- No traffic disruptions; focus on safety, cycling, walking in high-traffic zones.
Andorra la Vella council has launched beautification works at Prada Motxilla and Baixada del Molí this week, alongside announcing a separate remodelation of Plaça Bartomeu Rebés Duran starting next Monday, February 9.
At Prada Motxilla, near Lycée Comte de Foix, the project introduces new landscaping, tree planting, wider pedestrian areas, a bike lane, and reorganized vehicle flows to reduce daily congestion and enhance safety. The two-month effort will proceed in phases to limit disruption at the school.
Councillor for Public Services, Environment, and Natural Heritage Jordi Cabanes described the initiatives as a key step toward better road safety and public spaces in high-traffic zones. He emphasized prioritizing walking and cycling alongside smoother motor traffic integration.
On Baixada del Molí, between numbers 21 and 37 near Pavelló Toni Martí and Estadi Nacional, upgrades feature expanded sidewalks, renewed paving and lighting, traffic reorganization, a bike lane, and calming measures to lower speeds and support pedestrian crossings. Cabanes noted the area's heavy foot traffic, with changes set to improve aesthetics, add space for walkers, and streamline movement around sports facilities. Highlights include a new square in front of Pavelló Toni Martí, featuring planted zones, benches, and trees as a rest area. This phase is expected to last 18 weeks.
Council officials confirmed no disruptions to traffic or access at either site.
Separately, Plaça Bartomeu Rebés Duran—a central, busy spot—will undergo four months of work coordinated with FEDA's underground transformer station installation. While the square closes, perimeter walkways will maintain pedestrian and vehicle access, linking to Plaça del Poble and Plaça Vinyes.
Cònsol Major Sergi González said the remodelation gains greener space for residents at a key parish hub. Plans cover green areas, landscaping, pavement and lighting renewal, new benches, a fountain, service upgrades, traffic shifts to prioritize pedestrians near the parking ramp, and rearranged terraces for better commercial-pedestrian balance. The design aligns aesthetically with Avinguda Meritxell to unify central urban elements.
