Key Points

  • Work starts 7 April, finishes late April with 15-day repaving and signage.
  • Two lanes each direction + central turn lane to Carrer Na Maria Pla and Eo! parking.
  • Night works after Easter to minimize disruptions; 20% congestion drop expected.
  • Overcomes obstacles: relocates bus stop, charger, loading zone, restaurant terraces.

The Andorran government will start work on Tuesday, 7 April, to create a third lane on Carrer de la Unió from the Km 0 roundabout to the Dama de Gel area, with the new setup expected to be operational by late April.

State Secretary for Energy Transition, Transport and Mobility David Forné confirmed the timeline during a midday briefing, noting that repaving and new signage will take around 15 days. Most work will occur at night after Easter to limit traffic disruptions. The redesign includes two continuous lanes in each direction, plus a central lane for turns toward Carrer Na Maria Pla and the parking area for the upcoming Eo! shopping centre. Technical assessments predict a 20% drop in congestion at this major central valley choke point.

The project, first proposed last summer amid concerns over traffic from heating network connections between Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, gained approval from the National Mobility Table. Agreements with the Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany communes have cleared key obstacles, including relocating rubbish containers, a bus stop, a FEDA electric vehicle charger, a loading zone and—crucially—two restaurant terraces on the Escaldes side. Forné stressed that removing the terraces is essential to secure the central lane and boost mobility.

Forné framed the changes within broader efforts, including the now-permanent reversible lane on the CG-1 between Andorra la Vella and Sant Julià de Lòria, which has completed its trial phase and operates automatically. He also highlighted turborotondes, which have delivered strong results with minimal construction. Full project details will be shared at a 31 March press conference.
