Key Points

  • Works begin 7 April, lasting two weeks, mostly at night post-Easter.
  • Includes repaving, new signage, and relocation of bus stop, charger, terraces.
  • Agreements secured with Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany communes.
  • Expected operational by late April, following National Mobility Table approval.

The Andorran government will add a third lane to Carrer de la Unió, extending from kilometre zero to the Dama de Gel area, with works starting on Tuesday, 7 April, and lasting about two weeks.

State Secretary for Energy Transition, Transport and Mobility David Forné confirmed the details on Thursday. Crews will repave the road and install new signage, mostly at night after Easter week to limit traffic impacts. The layout will include two continuous lanes plus a central lane for smoother turns onto Carrer Maria Pla and toward the parking area for the future Fener shopping centre.

Agreements with Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany communes have cleared the path forward. Obstacles including rubbish containers, two restaurant terraces on the Escaldes side, a bus stop, and a FEDA electric charger will be relocated or removed. Forné noted that the terraces must go to secure the new setup, which technical studies predict could cut traffic by up to 20% at this congested central valley bottleneck.

First proposed last summer and approved by the National Mobility Table, the project aims for operation by late April. Full reconfiguration plans will be unveiled at a 31 March press conference. Forné described it as a substantial mobility boost, alongside recent measures like the permanent reversible lane between Andorra la Vella and Sant Julià, plus turborotondes that have eased flow with minimal works.
