Andorra la Vella's municipal authorities are planning a vertical car park on their remaining land at the Fener 2 site to offset the loss of nearly half its parking spaces, after the private owner reclaimed part of the plot.
Councillor for Circulation and Parking Xavier Surana confirmed the council's intentions on Tuesday, following the sharp reduction in capacity at Fener 2. The site, located along Carrer del Fener next to an existing building, now offers just around 50 spaces, down from more than 100 over the weekend.
Surana described the development as necessary to address local parking needs, noting that the original open-air lot had served drivers effectively. "We are clear that a vertical car park will go there," he said, adding that officials must still finalise its design and capacity. The project remains in early stages, with plans to build a modular structure on the council-owned portion adjacent to the built-up area.
The reduction stems from the private owner's decision to recover their half of the plot for their own development, likely an apartment building. While Surana expressed regret over the impact—"It's a shame because we provided a very good service to citizens"—he emphasised that the owners have full rights to repurpose the land as they see fit.
The council aims to expand parking availability on its share to restore service levels in the area. Details on the vertical facility's specifications have yet to be determined.
