  • Chains required on drive wheels from Nov 1 to May 15, winter tyres preferred.
  • Practice beforehand; check weather and roads before travel.
  • Improper fitting leads to accidents and hold-ups on steep routes.

Andorran police have released a video tutorial on social media to help drivers correctly fit snow chains, addressing a common issue where many carry them but struggle to install them during snowfalls.

Officers report frequent problems on snowy roads, particularly steep routes, where improper fitting leads to unnecessary risks, traffic hold-ups, or accidents. They urge drivers not to wait for bad weather to learn the process, but to practise in a safe area beforehand.

In the video, a police officer explains that chains must be homologated, correctly sized, and users should thoroughly read the model's instructions. To fit metal chains, wear gloves and lay them flat on the ground. Pass them behind the wheel, connect the ends over the top of the tyre, and centre them. Secure the remaining hooks, thread the chain through the lower tensioner, and adjust firmly. Drive a short distance to bed them in, then check and re-tension if needed.

Textile covers are simpler: start at the top of the wheel, pull them down to cover the full surface, then advance slightly for a snug fit. After use, wash them to preserve condition.

Police emphasise smooth driving with chains to prevent breakage, and removing them once roads clear. Chains go on the drive wheels only. From 1 November to 15 May, vehicles must be fitted with adhesion systems like chains or winter tyres—the latter being the preferred option.

Drivers should always check weather forecasts and road conditions before setting out.
