Andorran vehicles may use warning triangles or yellow emergency light in Spain and Andorra

For Andorran vehicles that break down on the road, signaling can be done either with the approved warning triangles required by Andorra’s traffic code or with the yellow emergency light that will become mandatory in Spain from 1 January. Both devices are valid on Spanish and Andorran roads, provided they are homologated and in good working order, and this applies only to vehicles with Andorran registration.

Officials at the Ministry of Economy, which oversees automobile-related regulation, say that Andorran vehicles are considered compliant with Spanish rules if they carry the homologated warning triangles required by Andorran law or the yellow auto emergency light (the functional equivalent of Spain’s V-16), as set out in Article 18 of Decree 213/2022. That legal equivalence means an Andorran-registered car driving in Spain may use its Andorran-approved triangles or the yellow emergency light and be regarded as meeting Spanish requirements.

Although both types of devices are legally valid in Spain, Andorran authorities recommend carrying the yellow emergency light because it is safer and more practical: it avoids the need to leave the vehicle. Drivers are also advised to ensure any device meets Andorran specifications, is homologated, and remains in good condition.

The same rules apply within Andorra: if an Andorran-registered vehicle breaks down on the national road network, it may use either the yellow auto emergency light or the homologated warning triangles, in accordance with Decree 213/2022 of 25 May 2022, approving the regulation on vehicle signals. In all cases, validity depends on the device being the type required by regulation and fit for use.
