A 33-year-old man from Guissona died in a head-on collision on the L-310 road yesterday afternoon, while the driver of an Andorran-plated car suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron Hospital.
The crash took place around 4:30pm at kilometre 16.9 near Sant Martí de la Morana, in the municipality of Torrefeta i Florejacs in Lleida's Segarra region. The two vehicles collided frontally for reasons still under investigation, leaving both drivers trapped inside. Emergency teams, including four Mossos d'Esquadra patrols, nine Catalan fire crews, and several Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques ambulances, responded to the scene. Firefighters carried out excarications on the two trapped occupants.
The road was closed for more than three hours between Gra and Guissona while responders extinguished a small roadside vegetation fire sparked by the impact.
The victim who died at the scene was identified as J.M.B.M. His counterpart, travelling in the Andorran-registered vehicle, was evacuated by helicopter with a serious prognosis.
This incident is the seventh traffic death in Lleida's counties this year. Police have provided no further updates on the cause.
