Key Points

  • French RN22 road into Andorra closes 7pm Wednesday due to up to 0.5m snow, reopens early Thursday.
  • Closure timed overnight to minimize impact on Pas de la Casa businesses during Easter peak.
  • Expected 66,000 vehicles entering Andorra, including 18,300 from France amid improving forecasts.
  • Port d'Envalira also closed overnight due to high-mountain conditions.

French authorities will close the RN22 road into Andorra from the French side at 7pm Wednesday due to adverse weather, including forecasts of up to half a metre of new snow in the area, Andorra's Mobility department has confirmed. The closure is expected to last overnight, with reopening planned for early Thursday morning if conditions improve, to limit disruption to Pas de la Casa's commercial sector.

Daniel Boneta, head of the Mobility area, shared the update after meetings with French officials earlier Wednesday. He emphasised that the decision rests with France, as it concerns their territory. "We collaborate and deploy all necessary resources on our side, including from COEX and others as required," Boneta stated.

The overnight timing aims to allow Pas de la Casa businesses to function normally during the evening, with the road targeted to reopen before ski slopes and shops open Thursday. Officials held a further session with French counterparts that morning to confirm improving projections ahead of a sunny Easter week.

Boneta noted that high-mountain conditions remain difficult despite calmer weather in Andorra's central parishes. The Port d'Envalira has been closed overnight, reflecting ongoing challenges in the area.

Mobility forecasts strong Easter traffic, projecting 66,000 vehicles entering Andorra in the coming days: 47,700 from Spain and 18,300 via France, supported by favourable longer-term weather outlooks. Reopening remains subject to actual conditions.
