Key Points

  • Convoy of 12+ coaches from Terres complex lost traction post-9:30am, blocking both lanes.
  • Police mobilized patrols, escorted snowploughs, towed wedged coach and breakdown.
  • Six coaches and one car fined for lacking mandatory snow chains.
  • Control points established at La Trava and Meritxell to check equipment.

A major traffic jam on Andorra's CG-2 at La Trava in Canillo parish has been resolved after nearly two hours, following a blockage caused by around a dozen foreign coaches lacking snow chains or winter equipment.

The incident began shortly after 9:30am when a convoy of tourist coaches, apparently departing the Terres complex toward northern ski resorts, lost traction in heavy snowfall. At least one coach became fully wedged across the uphill lane, another broke down, and the rest skidded to a halt behind them, trapping dozens of vehicles in both directions. Drivers endured waits of up to two hours, with accumulated snow preventing snowploughs from accessing the area.

Police received alerts around 9:15am and mobilised four to five patrols from traffic safety, citizen security, and Canillo's local service. Officers drove against oncoming traffic to reach the scene, prioritised escorting COEX snow-clearing machines through the jam, and coordinated with COEX to tow the fully blocked coach and the broken-down vehicle. Canillo's traffic service inspected vehicles, fining six coaches and one private car for missing mandatory equipment—most in the convoy carried no chains, not even in their luggage holds.

Circulation was restored before 11am once the road was cleared and chained areas established. To prevent repeats amid ongoing snow, police set up two control points for equipment checks: one at La Trava and another at the Meritxell roundabout.

The CG-2, a vital link between Andorra's parishes, is now fully operational, though weather conditions remain challenging.
