Key Points

  • Tender for architectural project starts 2026, post-variant road completion in ~2 years.
  • Avenue to become secondary route, enabling pedestrian zones, cobblestone repaving, wider pavements, and green spaces.
  • Dedicated bike lane ruled out due to expected low traffic.
  • Project funded in 2026 budget to create walkable town centre.

The Massana local council will tender the architectural and urban planning project to remodel and beautify Avinguda de Sant Antoni at the start of 2026, according to Cònsol Major Eva Sansa.

Construction work to make the town centre more pedestrian-friendly will not begin until the nearby variant road is complete, which Sansa expects in about two years. The council aims to finalise the project before the end of its current term, providing the next administration with a ready framework that it can adjust as needed.

Sansa described the variant as a turning point for mobility and urban layout in central Massana. Once operational, it will take over as the main road, allowing Avinguda de Sant Antoni to be reclassified as a secondary route. This shift would open up new urban design possibilities currently restricted because the avenue is designated as a general road.

Key elements of the project include assessing the feasibility of pedestrian-priority zones along the avenue, which could be repaved with cobblestones. The council also plans to evaluate widening pavements and adding more green spaces to create an inviting area for walking.

A dedicated bike lane, previously suggested, is likely to be ruled out. Sansa believes the sharp drop in traffic volume—most vehicles will use the variant—will make the avenue safe enough for cyclists without dedicated infrastructure.

Planning for the town centre's future began in the previous term, once it became clear the government would build the variant. With completion now in sight, the 2026 budget already includes funding for the project. The overarching goal is a more pleasant public space that encourages people to stroll through the heart of the parish.
