A snow-clearing lorry slid approximately 100 metres down a mountainside near Pas de la Casa on Wednesday while unloading snow at kilometre point 31.2 on the CG-2 road, close to the Envalira tunnel, but the driver escaped unharmed.
The incident took place around 1pm in a designated snow-dumping area off public roads, routinely used for such operations. Police reports state the vehicle suddenly moved backwards uncontrollably, with the driver unable to halt it. It then skidded down the slope of the snow management platform, cushioned by thick snow that prevented it from overturning or causing injuries.
No one was hurt in the episode, despite its dramatic nature. The heavy snow accumulation proved crucial in mitigating potential harm.
The event has drawn attention to the condition of the snow platform, which the Comú d'Encamp plans to expand and renovate soon to boost safety. Wear on the asphalt and concrete walls from heavy machinery and salt use has reportedly hastened the need for these works.
Experts and the lorry's insurance company will evaluate vehicle damage and determine the precise causes, which remain under investigation. Police have provided no further details as of Thursday afternoon.
