- A Guardia Civil conference in Lleida brought Spanish and Andorran police, customs and officials together to stress the frontier's strategic role and.
The Spanish government’s subdelegate in Lleida, José Crespín, this morning opened a Guardia Civil conference titled “The Traveller and Customs” to highlight the importance of the border crossing with Andorra and the services it provides to the public.
The meeting brought together the Andorran police, technicians from Andorran customs and other representatives from the Principality, and was organised by the Guardia Civil command in Lleida to underline the singularity and strategic relevance of the Spanish–Andorran border.
Crespín emphasised that multiple competencies converge at the frontier and that close coordination between agencies is essential to guarantee security, ensure legality and maintain the smooth movement of people and goods.
He also recalled an agreement reached in Brussels in July to remove certain controls between Spain and Gibraltar, a change that will make the Andorra crossing the only land customs border with a third country in Spain from 2026.
Presentations at the conference addressed customs regulations, policing competencies, traveller services and future operational challenges. Speakers included Meritxell Calvet, the delegate of the Spanish Tax Agency in Lleida, technicians from Andorran customs and representatives of various security forces.
Participants underlined the need to reinforce cooperation and align procedures ahead of the forthcoming changes, stressing the role of the border point in regional security and cross‑border mobility.
