Red Eléctrica Begins €7.73M 220kV Substation Upgrade at Adrall for Andorra Link
The project introduces gas-insulated switchgear to boost grid reliability in La Seu d'Urgell and enable a new double-circuit line enhancing Spain-Andorra electricity exchange.
Key Points
- Red Eléctrica starts €7.73M upgrade of 220kV Adrall substation near La Seu d'Urgell.
- Project installs gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to reduce visual impact and boost reliability.
- Upgrade enables new double-circuit 220kV line to Andorra, enhancing Spain-Andorra electricity exchange.
- Improves power supply quality in La Seu d'Urgell amid rising regional demand.
Red Eléctrica, Spain's national electricity grid operator, started construction this week on a new 220 kV substation at Adrall near La Seu d'Urgell. The 7.73 million euro project will upgrade the existing facility with gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology, enclosed in a building to reduce visual impact and improve landscape integration.
The work involves expanding and adapting the current substation by building this new GIS unit, which will eventually replace the old one. It will adopt a double busbar configuration to align with standard operating procedures.
This upgrade is critical for the planned 220 kV double-circuit line connecting Adrall to Andorra, set to begin construction in the coming months. The line will increase electricity exchange capacity between Spain and the principality while enhancing overall grid security.
In addition to supporting the cross-border connection, the new substation will strengthen power supply reliability and quality around La Seu d'Urgell to meet rising regional needs. The initiative fits within Spain's current electricity planning framework.
