Andorra Designates Andorra Telecom as ITU Satellite Registration Authority

Andorra Telecom gains official responsibility for ITU satellite filings, coordinating frequencies and orbits. This enhances Andorra's role in global telecom and opens space economy prospects.

Key Points

  • Council of Ministers approved decree assigning Andorra Telecom ITU satellite registration duties.
  • Company will prepare, submit, and handle registrations for radio frequencies and orbital resources.
  • Andorra Telecom already serves as Andorra's ITU liaison on telecom and spectrum issues.
  • Move aims to boost Andorra's telecom and space economy opportunities.

Andorra's Council of Ministers approved a decree this week designating Andorra Telecom as the notifying administration for satellite registrations with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The measure assigns the company responsibility for preparing, submitting, and handling these registrations, a process that reserves, coordinates, and protects radio frequencies and orbital resources vital for satellite system operations. Only ITU-recognized national administrations can perform these tasks, enabling operators to deploy and run their networks.

Andorra Telecom already acts as the Principality's specialized technical liaison and national contact point with the ITU on telecommunications and radio spectrum issues. It routinely engages in the body's activities, procedures, and coordination efforts.

With the decree now in effect, Andorra Telecom will also handle coordination with other international administrations and monitor operators using registrations notified under Andorra's auspices. The role fits within the company's existing legal functions.

Government officials state the step strengthens Andorra's position in a high-value sector and creates fresh economic opportunities linked to telecommunications and the space economy.
