Gilbert Saboya, former Andorran economy and foreign affairs minister under Toni Martí, has called for the Principality to pursue growth without sacrificing quality of life. Speaking on RNA's *Fent Números* programme, he highlighted the transformation of Andorra's tourism sector as its primary economic driver.
Saboya noted a reversal in visitor patterns: two decades ago, only 40% of tourists stayed overnight, but now the same proportion makes day trips. Beyond shopping and skiing, offerings have expanded significantly, with improvements in accommodation quality and dining options. "Andorra is much more attractive, attracting more visitors who spend more than they did 20 years ago," he said. Prices have risen accordingly, exemplified by the opening of a five-star hotel in Soldeu 25 years ago—an initiative led by visionary entrepreneur Josep Areny.
The ex-minister pointed to broader appeal drawing YouTubers, athletes, and business owners to relocate. "Andorra is enjoying unprecedented success and high turnover figures—it's trendy—but this brings side effects," he added. Demand to live in the country has surged, increasing stress levels.
Faced with this boom, Saboya outlined two paths forward. One advocates scaling back: "I want fewer people." He dismissed this as nonsensical, arguing against deliberate population reduction. Instead, he urged focusing on expansion while safeguarding living standards: "The challenge is to grow more, but preserving quality of life."
