Encamp's Festa Major Honours 40+ Elders Over 85 in Emotional New Tribute

Encamp's Festa Major featured an emotional new tribute to more than 40 residents aged over 85, marking the first edition of a broader format that replaced the longstanding practice of honouring only the two eldest padrins.

The ceremony, organised by the Comissió de Festes with backing from the Comú d'Encamp's departments, drew goosebumps from attendees through a video montage highlighting key parish milestones over the past 90 years. It covered sombre events like the 1937 floods that severely impacted Encamp and the country, alongside positive developments such as the birth of Pas de la Casa and the area's subsequent transformations.

Minor Consul Xavier Fernández described the updated approach as a more collective way to express gratitude, rather than focusing solely on individuals. He noted that the parish has recognised its elders since the 1970s, a tradition that reflects its strong customs and rituals.

Around 40 seniors, born mainly in the 1920s, 1930s and up to 1941, gathered with relatives and friends to share memories and reconnect. The event underscored their role in shaping the parish and urged younger generations to value their wisdom.

Sílvia Ramond, councillor for Social Affairs and Seniors, emphasised the personal stories and quiet daily contributions that have sustained the community. Albert Trullà of the Comissió de Festes called it one of the year's standout moments, centred on human connections and intergenerational heritage.

Attendees included high-profile figures such as General Syndic Carles Ensenyat, minister Ramon Lladós, general councillor Pere Marsenyach, and communal councillors Joan Sans and Sabrina Grégoire.

The tribute closed a vibrant festival that wrapped up Sunday with water inflatables and the Festa de l'Escuma at Parc de l'Ossa, followed by a DJ Mari Baz performance in Plaça de Sant Miquel. Organisers plan to expand it next year to those aged 80 to 85, then include new 80-year-olds annually.
