Andorra Renews €128K Deal for Cubil Tumulus and Orris Route Archaeology

A renewed partnership funds advanced excavations and heritage signage at key prehistoric sites in Encamp parish. The effort highlights Andorra's ancient iron smelting and pastoral legacy through scientific analysis.

Key Points

  • Andorran government and Encamp council allocate €128,000 for 2026-2027 excavations at Cubil tumulus and Estany Forcat orri.
  • Funds support sediment sampling, micromorphological analysis, and flotation techniques.
  • New interpretive signage planned for Ruta dels Orris trail to promote prehistoric heritage.
  • Builds on 2019 agreement and prior digs since 2008, highlighting pastoral history.

The Andorran government and Encamp parish council have renewed their partnership to advance archaeological research and public outreach along the Ruta dels Orris and at the Cubil tumulus, allocating 128,000 euros equally for campaigns in 2026 and 2027.

This addendum to the 2019 collaboration agreement will fund ongoing excavations at the Cubil tumulus and its surrounding area, where phases from pre- and post-tumulus periods have already been documented. Work will feature systematic sediment sampling and micromorphological analysis.

The initiative extends to the orri—an ancient iron smelting site—at Estany Forcat, with planned flotation techniques and archaeometric sediment studies.

Additionally, the project includes designing new interpretive signage for the Ruta dels Orris trail and Cubil tumulus to boost heritage promotion and preservation.

The effort underscores the site's role as a unique testament to Andorra's prehistoric cultural heritage, particularly pastoral activities in Encamp parish.

This builds on long-term joint initiatives. The 2019 agreement followed earlier excavations, including the Cubil orri in 2008 and 2009, Encenrera in 2016, and Emportona in 2017. Positive outcomes from those phases have driven the decision to sustain and expand the research. The Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry will cover 64,000 euros, matched by Encamp council.
