Andorra la Vella is reviving its Codfish Days from April 20 to May 3, featuring 23 parish restaurants with special menus and dishes that reinterpret the staple ingredient through a modern lens.
The event, last staged in 2009, draws on the capital's deep-rooted culinary heritage. Codfish has anchored Andorran mountain cuisine for its long shelf life and nutritional value in a landlocked country, frequently paired with local produce like potatoes, peppers and allioli—especially during Lent. Organised under the "Cuinem el Futur" banner, the initiative pairs tradition with innovation, showcasing the skills of local chefs to draw in residents and tourists alike.
Consell Major Sergi González highlighted the forward-looking approach: the revival not only honours culinary history but also aims to showcase restaurateurs' talent and position codfish as an economic booster and point of national pride. He pointed to the 23 participants as proof of the sector's commitment to quality and expanding the capital's gastronomic and cultural profile.
A professional jury will select the top three dishes, with prizes of €1,000, €500 and €250. Diners who sample the offerings and submit a short satisfaction survey will enter a draw for a meal for two at the winning restaurant.
The event builds on the original Codfish Day, launched in 1992 at Plaça del Poble and spanning 16 editions. Highlights included the 2006 World Codfish Days with Iceland as guest nation, where events distributed more than 150kg of cod. Organisers hope to cement Andorra la Vella's status as a top food destination.
