Encamp will host a special event on Thursday, March 26, to mark World Poetry Day, featuring poetry readings and a theatrical monologue on linguist Pompeu Fabra.
The celebration takes place at 7:45pm in the party hall of the Complex Esportiu i Sociocultural d’Encamp. Organised in two parts, it opens with speeches from Encamp's senior consul, Laura Mas, and Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Mònica Bonell.
The first segment includes a poetry recital by volunteers from the Language Policy Service's Voluntariat per la llengua programme and students from María Moliner school. They will read winning entries from the 28th Miquel Martí i Pol poetry competition, selections from Vanessa Garcia Garre's collection *Versos convidats*, and other works. The evening also features a reading of Blai Bonet's poem *Foc d’ocell*, chosen by the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes to honour the centenary of the Majorcan poet's birth—a key innovative voice in contemporary Catalan literature.
The second part presents the premiere of *Pompeu Fabra: jugada mestra!*, a monologue performed by Òscar Intente and directed by Maria Pla. Produced by Inútils Mots –teatre de la paraula–, the show uses a sports metaphor to explore Fabra's scientific, human and civic contributions to standardising the Catalan language. Drawing on quotes from figures including Josep Pla, Salvador Espriu, Carles Riba, Joan Coromines, Joan Fuster and Pere Quart, it highlights his role in creating the grammar, norms and dictionary that underpin modern Catalan. With humour, the production stresses that "without rules, there is no game," making Fabra's legacy accessible and engaging for audiences.
