Engordany bridge floodlit as three-bridge upgrade progresses

The parish council of Escaldes‑Engordany has switched on the new lighting at the Engordany bridge; the installation is already operating at night. Work is under way on the Tosca bridge and is expected to be completed next week, with its floodlights activated once installation finishes. Mounting of the lighting at the Escalls bridge is scheduled for the second half of January, after which all three bridges will be illuminated.

Final optical and intensity adjustments will be carried out in mid‑January by the engineer responsible for the scheme, who will travel from France to optimise the installations. The initiative aims to improve nighttime visibility and to highlight the parish’s architectural heritage as part of broader efforts to preserve local patrimony and continue revitalising the upper part of Escaldes‑Engordany.

The lighting work follows a rehabilitation programme on the three viaducts that began in 2023 and cost €488,000, funded equally by the parish council and the national government. The restoration included targeted interventions: on the Engordany bridge the cobbled surface was lowered and the arches made visually slimmer; at the Tosca bridge crews addressed a highly degraded surrounding area and buried utility pipes running along the riverbed; and at the Escalls bridge an archaeological excavation revealed the structure’s original donkey‑back profile, which was preserved in the restoration.

The parish says the lighting project forms part of a package of measures to preserve and showcase Escaldes‑Engordany’s historic elements and to reinforce the revitalisation of the town centre. Two other historic bridges in Escaldes, the Pla and Sassanat bridges, were not included in this phase of works.
