The fifth season of Stranger Things has reached 59.6 million views since its Nov. 27 release, becoming Netflix’s biggest English-language TV debut to date.
According to Netflix’s TUDUM, Volume 1 of the final season entered the Top 10 in 93 countries and hit number one in 90 of them. The new episodes are the most-watched on the streaming service in 90 countries, and all five seasons of the series have now appeared in Netflix’s Top 10. Netflix data also show that the first four seasons have accumulated 1.2 billion views since the show premiered in July 2016.
“The number of fans who have already watched Volume 1 is impressive; the response has been larger than we could have imagined. The show is a decade old, and seeing the fanbase not only endure but continue to grow has been incredibly gratifying for us,” the Duffer brothers said.
Variety reports that this places the latest Stranger Things season as the third biggest debut in Netflix history, surpassed only by parts 2 and 3 of the South Korean series Squid Game.
Set in the 1980s, Stranger Things follows a group of teenage friends as they uncover secret government experiments and supernatural forces linked to the Upside Down.
The final season is being released in parts: the first volume, already available, contains four episodes; the second volume, due Dec. 25, has three episodes; and the concluding volume, scheduled for Dec. 31, is a single two-hour episode that will also be shown in some cinemas.
