Andorra and Catalonia Strengthen Cross-Border Weather Collaboration Amid Climate Risks

Andorra's National Meteorological Service and Protection Civil department met with Catalan counterparts on Wednesday at the Prat del Rull government building to strengthen cross-border collaboration amid increasing weather risks from climate change.

The technical session, led by Andorran director Carles Miquel of the National Meteorological Service and Cristian Pons of Protection Civil, included Sarai Sarroca, director of Catalonia's Meteorological Service, and Marta Cassany, director of Protection Civil at the Generalitat.

Delegates shared operational protocols, monitoring systems, warning criteria, and communication channels to align efforts in assessing severe weather, issuing alerts, and safeguarding lives and property. They reviewed recent incidents in both territories to identify best practices, address shortcomings, and refine joint responses. Officials stressed the need for tight integration between meteorological teams and protection civil units to customize alerts for specific threats and enhance overall readiness.

In the afternoon, Protection Civil representatives from Andorra and Catalonia progressed on a draft administrative agreement to formalize their ongoing technical cooperation. The meeting reflects shared commitment to tackling more frequent and intense adverse weather events.
