Andorra Downgrades Heat Alerts as Warm Weather Persists

Andorra's Meteorological Service has downgraded heat alerts across the country, with orange warnings in the centre and south now reduced to yellow through Friday evening, while northern yellow alerts ended Wednesday at 9pm. A nationwide yellow storm warning also lifted Wednesday night. The heatwave, driven by a North African warm air mass carrying suspended dust, saw highs of 35°C in Andorra la Vella on Monday, 34°C Tuesday and 33°C Wednesday, with mid-altitude readings around 29-30°C at 1,500 metres and 18-19°C at Pas de la Casa.

Afternoon cloud buildup brought potential isolated showers or storms, shifting southwards, though evenings remained warm and dry. Civil Protection had maintained a prealert for intense heat peaking above 32°C below 1,100 metres. Officials recommended avoiding midday exertion, staying hydrated, seeking shade, wearing light clothing and using ventilation. Vulnerable groups—infants, the elderly and those with health conditions—received extra support at care facilities via the Social Affairs ministry.

Fire risks prompted Andorra la Vella to close barbecue points at parish picnic areas from Tuesday until further notice, with Sant Julià de Lòria following suit. Picnic spaces remain open, but fire points are suspended, and authorities have asked for public cooperation.

Current temperatures exceed seasonal norms by 5°C on minima and 8°C on maxima. Acció Climàtica highlighted a sustained warming trend since 1950, using warming stripes from FEDA and Ransol stations for ShowYourStripesDay. Data show blues fading to reds, especially post-2011, with 2022-2024 as the warmest years.

Relief continues gradually. Thursday forecasts predict 32°C in the capital under sunny skies with afternoon clouds, rising to 33°C Friday and 34°C Saturday before showers increase Sunday, dropping highs to 29°C. Full normalization may not arrive until next weekend.
