Andorra Waste Centre Processes 52,621 Tonnes in 2025, Powers 14.5% of Nation with Clean Energy
Andorra's CTR facility turned waste into significant electricity and heat in 2025, with monitoring confirming zero environmental harm and emissions far under limits.
Key Points
- Processed 52,621 tonnes of waste, generating 16,711 MWh electricity (14.5% of national production) fed to FEDA grid.
- Recovered 17,551 MWh thermal energy for Andorra la Vella's district heating network.
- Emissions well below limits; no environmental impact on nearby areas per commission review.
- Commission chaired by Environment Minister includes health reps, locals, and environmental groups; full reports online.
Andorra's Waste Treatment Centre (CTR), operated by Ctrasa, processed 52,621 tonnes of waste in 2025, generating 16,711 MWh of electricity—equivalent to 14.5% of national production—fed into the FEDA grid.
The facility also recovered 17,551 MWh of thermal energy, supplied via the FEDA Ecoterm district heating network in Andorra la Vella.
The CTR's Information and Monitoring Commission, meeting on Tuesday under Environment Minister Guillem Casal's chairmanship, examined 2025 surveillance results and activity reports. It determined that emissions remained well below regulatory limits, as well as national and international reference values. Environmental assessments found no discernible influence from the centre's operations on nearby areas, with indicators staying within expected parameters.
Participants included representatives from the Health ministry, Andorra la Vella commune, consellers, environmental groups, and local residents. The commission oversees waste volumes and quality, incidents at the Thermal Waste Treatment Centre, control plans, and corrective measures when needed. It also informs the public about the facility's health and environmental effects.
