Escaldes-Engordany Removes Hazardous Black Poplar from Prat del Roure Park

The Escaldes-Engordany parish council removed a black poplar (*Populus nigra*) from Prat del Roure park on Wednesday morning after a routine tree audit identified it as a high collapse risk.

Arboriculture specialists had assessed the tree's health, stability, and hazards, finding low vitality, significant biomechanical issues, and extensive necrosis in the stump, trunk, and main branches. Located next to the skatepark and play areas, the spot draws daily crowds of children, youths, and families. Officials emphasized the action was driven solely by preventive safety concerns.

A security perimeter was established before work began to protect park users. Following removal, experts will examine the tree's interior to pinpoint deterioration causes, aiding improved monitoring of public trees and reducing future incidents.

Technical staff will evaluate replacement options later, during a suitable planting period, considering the site's conditions and environmental needs.

The move aligns with the parish's responsible tree management policy, which prioritizes preservation where possible. Recently, a tree on Carrer de la Unió, impacted by road lane widening works, was transplanted to Prat del Roure's new green zone for better growth conditions. Removal is reserved for cases where technical reports confirm risks to public safety.
