Pirinenca de Serveis has won a 2026 Silver Broom Award for its community composting plant in La Massana, Andorra's first facility of its kind, which promotes circular economy practices and sustainable organic waste management.
The award from the Technical Association for Waste Management and the Environment (Ategrus) recognises leading initiatives in waste handling, urban cleanliness, environmental innovation, and sustainability. Now in its nearly 40th year, the prizes were presented at TECMA, the International Fair of Urbanism and Environment, held at IFEMA in Madrid.
The jury commended the company's strong commitment to circular economy and sustainable development through this pioneering pilot project in the Principat. Opened in October 2025 in La Massana, the plant converts residents' organic waste into high-quality compost using an advanced system that accelerates organic decomposition by up to four times compared to conventional processes. This shortens treatment times, reduces waste sent for final disposal, cuts the environmental impact of transporting organics abroad, and boosts local resource efficiency.
The project received support from La Massana commune, the Andorran Government, and the Reig Foundation. Company directors called the award "the result of collaboration between institutions, technical teams, and citizens," adding that it shows Andorra's capacity to lead innovative circular economy efforts.
The Silver Broom honour establishes the La Massana plant as a sector reference point and reinforces Pirinenca de Serveis' focus on environmental protection, innovation, and responsible resource use.
