Catalan Delegation Tours Andorra's La Massana Composting Plant for Waste Ideas

A delegation from Catalonia's Waste Agency and Calafell Town Council toured the community composting plant in La Massana, operated by Pirinenca de Serveis, to study its pioneering circular economy model for organic waste.

The visit took place the previous day, with technicians and representatives examining the facility's operations and technology that transforms organic residues into high-quality compost through an efficient, sustainable process. Their aim was to assess Andorra's experience and explore adapting the model and equipment to Catalan territories, aiming to launch new organic waste treatment systems that cut environmental impact and promote circular practices.

Inaugurated in 2025, the plant has become a benchmark for sustainable residue management by prioritising local processing to minimise transport needs. The approach has drawn growing interest from Andorran authorities, Spanish administrations and other entities, according to the operator.

Pirinenca de Serveis, part of the Heracles Group, received the Premi Escoba award in 2026 for outstanding residue management and urban hygiene, recognising its role in advancing environmental innovation. The company described the Catalan exchange as further affirmation of the project's value.
