Escaldes-Engordany Opens 7 Climate Shelters to Combat Extreme Heat

Escaldes-Engordany authorities have opened seven climate shelters in air-conditioned public facilities to shield residents from intense heat episodes.

The refuges are located at Llar de Jubilats, Centre d’Art d’Escaldes-Engordany (CAEE), Espai Caldes, Biblioteca Comunal, La Llanterna, Espai Jovent, and Servei de Tràmits de Casa Comuna. Each site provides reserved seating for rest and recovery, along with free water.

The initiative targets vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, people with chronic conditions, and those with mobility challenges. An on-demand bus service helps those facing transport difficulties reach the shelters.

Cònsol Major Rosa Gili highlighted the increasing frequency of extreme heat, stressing that public administrations must supply simple yet effective resources. She said the measure ensures anyone in need has access to a comfortable place for rest and hydration.

This forms part of wider efforts to prevent heat-related risks, with special emphasis on at-risk populations. Officials encourage residents to follow Protecció Civil recommendations: stay hydrated, avoid midday sun exposure, and make use of the shelters when required.
