Andorra Issues Heat and Wildfire Alerts as Fourth Heatwave Peaks at 32-35°C

Protecció Civil has issued prealerts for high temperatures and wildfire risk ahead of the peak of Andorra's fourth heatwave this summer, with maximums expected to reach 32-35°C in central and southern valleys from Monday to Friday.

The warnings cover intense heat across the country, including temperatures above 30°C at 1,500m in the north, where a yellow alert remains active. Wildfire danger stands at very high in the centre and south, and high in the north. As a result, authorities have suspended open fires, pyrotechnic launches, and barbecue use in designated areas. Officials urge caution in natural spaces, avoiding lit cigarette butts or matches, and proper waste disposal in containers.

For heat protection, Protecció Civil advises limiting physical activity and outings during peak hours, frequent hydration, light clothing, head protection, and extra care for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those with health issues. Residents should also shield homes from sun by lowering shutters and closing windows midday.

In Escaldes-Engordany, the comú has activated seven climate shelters in air-conditioned public spaces to offer relief: Llar de Jubilats, Centre d’Art d’Escaldes-Engordany (CAEE), Espai Caldes, Biblioteca Comunal, La Llanterna, Espai Jovent, and Servei de Tràmits de Casa Comuna. Each provides seating areas for rest.

Cònsol Major Rosa Gili previously noted the rising frequency of extreme heat, emphasising the need for accessible public resources to ensure rest and hydration for those in need. An on-demand bus service supports access for people with mobility or transport challenges.

The measures align with broader efforts to mitigate heat risks, targeting at-risk populations and echoing Protecció Civil's guidance to stay hydrated, avoid midday sun, and use available shelters.
