Andorra's Third-Warmest August on Record Hits 21.4°C Amid Heatwaves and Storms

August 2026 marked Andorra's third-warmest August since records began in 1950, behind only 2023 and 2024, according to Acció Climàtica's latest climate summary. The FEDA hydroelectric plant recorded an average of 21.4°C, 2.2°C above the long-term norm—close to 2023's 21.6°C and 2024's 21.5°C.

High temperatures dominated early in the month, with anomalies over +3°C on 11 of the first 20 days. Maximums exceeded 25°C on 26 days—well above the typical 19—and topped 30°C on 10 occasions, double the climatic average of four. The hottest reading was 35.4°C at Borda Vidal, at 864 metres elevation, on 13 August. The coldest came later at 3.1°C in Fonts d’Arinsal, at 2,681 metres, on 27 August.

The year's fifth heatwave, starting 29 July, ended on 2 August, with no others following. Shifting weather patterns then brought convective storms and cooler air. For the third year running since 2023, no frost occurred at any station during the month.

Rainfall surged to very wet levels, reaching 153.8 mm at FEDA—208.2% of normal—and averaging 118.3 mm across stations. Amounts varied widely, peaking at 201 mm in Borda Vidal, where four events accounted for 146 mm, and bottoming at 74.2 mm in Tosa dels Espiolets.

Notable storms included widespread thunderstorms on 8 August with hail, peaking at 24.4 mm in 30 minutes at La Comella. On 15 August, a fierce system hammered eastern areas, delivering 65.4 mm at Envalira-Antenes near Pas de la Casa, including 21.6 mm in half an hour. Strong winds also struck from 24-27 August, with gusts to 121 km/h at Tosa dels Espiolets and 68 km/h at Salines in the valley floor. High lightning activity during storms ignited small forest fires, including one in Canòlich on 11 August that worsened two days later, despite dry underlying forest conditions.
