Andorra's Birdwatching Data Joins EuroBirdPortal for Real-Time Tracking

Andorra's birdwatching observations are now feeding into the EuroBirdPortal (EBP), the European platform that tracks movements of nearly 600 bird species across the continent in near real-time.

Andorra Recerca + Innovació (AR+I) feeds local sightings from the ornitho.ad citizen science portal into the platform's upgraded visor. Launched in 2015 alongside the Institut Català d’Ornitologia (ICO), ornitho.ad gathers records from volunteers and enthusiasts across the Principat, which now integrate into broader European databases to strengthen monitoring of bird populations.

The platform's enhancements provide a fuller picture of species distributions and migration routes, with updates arriving almost instantly. AR+I highlights the potential for such data to pinpoint areas at risk of zoonotic diseases spread by wild birds during outbreaks. It also deepens understanding of Andorra's biodiversity while supporting cross-border research and conservation.

The EBP links over 50 ornithological groups from 41 countries, drawing on nearly 750 million records since 2010 via national portals. Ornitho submissions make up 44% of the total. Upgrades come via the LIFE EBP Reinforcement project, backed by the EU's LIFE programme.

AR+I urges birdwatchers to contribute sightings on ornitho.ad to bolster the portal and aid continental efforts. The development was first announced from Andorra la Vella on 21 September 2026.
