Andorra Logs Hottest September on Record at 19.6ºC, 4.4ºC Above Average

Andorra experienced its warmest September since 1950, driven by a historic heatwave and minimal rainfall. The FEDA plant saw summer-like highs exceeding July norms, with two stations breaking minimum temperature records.

Key Points

  • Average temperature of 19.6ºC beats 2023 record by 1.2ºC anomaly
  • First September heatwave from Sept 3-7 set records at six stations
  • FEDA station had 21 days over 25ºC, peak 35.9ºC at Borda Vidal
  • Precipitation at 17.4mm nationally, sixth-driest September since 1950

Andorra has recorded its hottest September since records began in 1950, with an average temperature of 19.6ºC—4.4ºC above the climatic norm, according to the Servei Meteorològic's monthly bulletin.

This mark surpasses the previous record from September 2023, which saw a 3.2ºC anomaly. Over the last decade, only two Septembers have fallen below average. The month featured the country's first observed September heatwave, from the 3rd to the 7th, which set records at six stations with more than 15 years of data.

The FEDA hydroelectric plant station recorded 21 summer days above 25ºC, including seven at or over 30ºC. Its September average exceeded the July and August norms of 19.4ºC and 19.1ºC from the 1991-2020 reference period. Just two days—the 10th and 11th—remained near normal. Anomalies reached 8ºC above average on the 6th, with 22 days at 3ºC or more, 16 at 5ºC or higher, and five above 7ºC. The peak temperature hit 35.9ºC at Borda Vidal on the 4th, topping the prior record of 33.5ºC from 2016.

Precipitation remained low, ranking it the sixth-driest September since 1950. The FEDA station measured 13.6 mm—17.1% of normal—while the national average was 17.4 mm. No station surpassed 30% of normal rainfall, with nearly all concentrated in the final two days. The northwest and east saw slightly more, at Sorteny (29.4 mm) and Envalira-Antenes (25.6 mm).

Two stations also broke records for the highest minimum temperatures in a September.
