Andorra Lowers Breast Cancer Screening Age to 45 Following Global Guidelines

Andorra's Health Ministry is working to lower the starting age for breast cancer screening from 50 to 45, in line with international medical guidelines.

Health Minister Helena Mas confirmed the effort on Thursday, emphasising that it stems from global recommendations rather than recent changes in Spain. The Spanish Public Health Commission has approved extending its screening programme to women aged 45 to 74, up from the previous 50-to-69 range. Mas clarified that Andorra's review predates this and aligns with advice discussed at international forums.

"There are international recommendations indicating that breast cancer screening should begin at 45, and we are already working on it," Mas stated. She noted the topic arose this week at the World Health Assembly, as well as meetings linked to the Andorran Breast Cancer Association (ABMS).

The ministry aims to broaden the target population for these voluntary but strongly advised mammograms, which are currently offered free every two years to women aged 50 to 74 registered in the Principat. Expanding access would strengthen early detection, improving outcomes for the disease.

Mas stressed the initiative follows evidence from bodies such as the Network of Health Technology Assessment Agencies (RedETS) and the European Union Council, independent of neighbouring policies. No timeline for implementation has been announced.
