Andorra Awards Contracts for Oncology Hospital Upgrade and School Rehab

The Andorran government has awarded several contracts for infrastructure upgrades, including oncology services at Hospital Nostra Senyora de Meritxell, the rehabilitation of the former CATSA building in Sant Julià de Lòria, and renovations at the local primary school.

COAN, SAU, secured the €1.891.723 contract to refurbish the hospital's -3 basement level, previously used by mental health services until October 2025. The work will consolidate all oncology services into one area, housing outpatient clinics for medical oncology and hematological oncology, radiotherapeutic oncology, nursing oncology, psycho-oncology, nutrition, and social work. A new day hospital will feature a nursing consultation, care area, and 10 treatment bays. Direct access from Avinguda Fiter i Rossell via pedestrian routes and lifts will create separate patient circuits, reducing movement through other hospital zones and enhancing safety and comfort. The contractor has eight months to complete the project.

In Sant Julià de Lòria, architects Sònia Palau and Bonaventura Riberaygua won the €270,000 contract to draft plans and oversee rehabilitation of the former Cooperativa Andorrana de Tabacs (CATSA) building. Constructed in 1962 with 2,886 square metres, the tobacco factory closed in 2010. The government and local council bought it in March 2025 for €4.2 million, split equally, to preserve industrial heritage and repurpose it as the Centre Andorrà de Tecnologies i Solucions Avançades. The site will include R&D+i labs, startup spaces, university centres, and areas for innovation-focused corporations. This aligns with the National Plan for Innovation and Economic Diversification, targeting 7-8% of GDP in innovation spending over 10 years. The 2026 budget allocates €5 million—the largest yet—for such initiatives. The architects have eight weeks to submit designs.

The same architect, Sònia Palau, also received a €67,000 contract for project planning and oversight at the Escola Andorrana de maternal i primera ensenyança in Sant Julià de Lòria. No major updates have occurred since construction, and the work will address structural and functional improvements, safety and fire compliance, accessibility, window and door replacements, flooring, ceilings, energy-efficient tech upgrades, interior reorganization, kitchen refurbishment, and playground enhancements. The project executive must be ready within eight weeks, with phased construction to follow. These efforts support ongoing maintenance and modernization of public educational facilities.
