Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital's mental health service has received a new van donated by the Patronat de Dames de Nostra Senyora de Meritxell, replacing an obsolete vehicle over 20 years old that had hindered patient transport.
The handover addresses a longstanding need raised by Andorran Health Services (SAAS) roughly three years ago, when the service sought donor support amid worsening reliability issues. Cristina Cerqueda, president of the Patronat, explained that the group stepped in directly as demand grew urgent. She highlighted how many patients lack family assistance for outings, adding, "It was essential for them to travel securely with their therapists."
The van will serve users across all mental health areas—adults, youth, and addictions—linked to both SAAS services and Fundació Meritxell. It enables safer transfers between facilities and access to off-site therapies, including mountain trips, animal-assisted sessions, artistic pursuits, outdoor exercise, and community integration activities that aid recovery and promote autonomy.
SAAS director Meritxell Cosan described the donation as a vital gain for all patient groups, enhancing external programs in natural settings to boost mental well-being. The vehicle also optimizes healthcare resources by facilitating these essential interventions.
The delivery event overcame initial noise disruptions from nearby construction, which were successfully managed, marking a significant logistical improvement for the service.
