Andorra Health Service Warns: Eclipse Eye Protection Essential to Avoid Blindness

Andorra's health authorities have urged residents to use only certified eclipse glasses when viewing today's partial solar eclipse, which starts around 7:35pm and reaches maximum coverage at about 8:29pm, shortly before sunset.

The Ministry of Health and the Commerce, Competition and Consumer department emphasized that approved eyewear must carry the European CE mark and ISO 12312-2 certification. These filters block 99.9% of visible light, 100% of ultraviolet radiation, and at least 97% of infrared rays. Glasses should fully cover the eyes, show no scratches or distortions, bear the manufacturer's details, usage instructions, safety warnings, and an expiration date or lifespan, and be purchased from reputable sellers like opticians. They must not have been altered or repaired.

Officials warned that unprotected direct sunlight—even briefly—can cause serious, irreversible eye damage. Standard sunglasses, even dark ones, X-rays, smoked glass, photographic negatives, or DIY filters provide inadequate protection. Binoculars, telescopes, or cameras need dedicated certified solar filters to avoid harming eyes or equipment.

In some Spanish regions, glasses were recalled because their filters were too dark, potentially leading viewers to remove them and expose their eyes to direct rays. Andorra's Commerce department reported no complaints or alerts about non-compliant products sold locally, so no recalls have taken place.

Health experts noted that retinal injuries often develop without pain, resulting in blurred vision, blind spots, color shifts, or permanent blindness. Adults must closely supervise children at all times.

For the best views, authorities recommend open areas with clear westward horizons. Afternoon showers and clouds are expected to ease by 7pm, though some low cloud may linger until 8pm, with conditions likely improving at peak time. Viewers should verify the latest weather updates.

This event, visible across much of the Iberian Peninsula, marks the first in a series of three notable eclipses from the region, followed by August 2, 2027, and January 26, 2028. Always check glasses for defects beforehand and keep them on while facing the sun.
