Andorra Launches Flu and RSV Vaccination Campaigns October 1

Andorra's health authorities will launch the seasonal flu vaccination campaign on October 5, running through January 31, 2027. The effort prioritizes individuals over 60 and those under 60 with risk factors, who must book appointments at primary care centres and present a prescription from their primary care physician if applicable.

The programme also targets groups likely to transmit the virus to vulnerable populations, such as staff at healthcare and social health facilities, essential community service workers, and personnel and inmates at the Centre Penitenciari. Delivery follows the established format from prior years.

In the previous campaign, from October 6, 2025, to January 31, 2026, officials administered 8,091 flu doses—3,809 to men and 4,282 to women. Annual vaccination remains the primary defence against severe illness, complications, and hospitalisations, while limiting spread. Evolving flu strains and fading immunity necessitate yearly doses.

Alongside this, preventive treatment for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) begins October 1 for newborns and children under two with risk factors, using nirsevimab. This forms part of the adult vaccination calendar for those over 80 and residents over 60 in social health centres.

Newborns born between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027, receive the free treatment at the hospital shortly after birth. The SAAS paediatrics service, in coordination with primary care, will identify other eligible children under two, notify families, and schedule administrations at the day hospital. Infants born abroad without prior dosing can access it via primary care appointments. The full RSV period extends to March 31, 2027.

For adults over 80, the free RSV vaccine is available at primary care centres with standard booking and no prescription required. Those over 60 in social health centres get it on site. It may be combined with the flu vaccine.

Since RSV immunisation started last year, 709 doses have been given, including 626 to people aged 80 and above. Authorities stress its value in averting severe infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, particularly among infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
