Flu cases in Andorra show slight decline or stability below epidemic threshold, with elderly most affected.
Key Points
- Flu at 11-12.93/100k, down from prior weeks, below threshold
- Elderly 74+ most impacted; ARI at 131.61/100k, kids 0-4 worst
- Virology: 12.5% positive, 75% metapneumovirus, 16.67% RSV
- Europe sees flu decline, high RSV; officials push vaccination
Flu incidence in Andorra for the week of 9 to 15 March—week 11 of surveillance—stood at 11 cases per 100,000 inhabitants according to the Health Ministry's latest update, though other reports cite 12.93 cases per 100,000, marking a slight decline or stabilisation from prior weeks and remaining below the epidemic threshold.
The ministry's respiratory virus surveillance report notes low notification levels with minor fluctuations continuing into this period. Adults aged 74 and over were the most affected group, consistent with seasonal patterns. Acute respiratory infections (ARI) registered 131.61 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, stable compared to the previous week, with children aged 0-4 years most impacted.
Virological analysis showed 12.5% of tested respiratory virus samples positive. Among positives, 75% were metapneumovirus, 16.67% respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and 8.33% adenovirus.
Across Europe, general practitioner visits for respiratory symptoms have returned to baseline levels in most countries, signaling a general decline in virus circulation. Flu activity is in a descending phase, while RSV circulation remains high with elevated hospital admissions, though its peak may have passed.
Health officials continue to emphasise vaccination benefits. Nurse Mireia Castillo from the Canillo Primary Care Centre noted at the campaign's launch that higher uptake would reduce severe outcomes and hospitalisations from these illnesses.
