The Andorran government has launched a tender for works to transform the former mental health facilities at Meritxell Hospital into a new oncology unit, with an estimated cost of €1.579 million.
The project aims to centralise all specialised cancer care in one dedicated area by next year. It involves expanding the existing 400 square metres of space by covering part of the terrace on the hospital's -3 level. The initiative, designed by Vitullo Arquitectura, is one of the key healthcare priorities for 2026.
Authorities expect to select a contractor by late spring, with construction lasting eight months. This would allow the unit to open during the first quarter of 2027.
The space became available after mental health services moved to the El Ròdol building several months ago. However, the current area is too small for the planned services, necessitating the extension.
The new unit will feature three main zones: a reception area; a day hospital with 10 bays, a consultation room, a treatment room, a staff office-storage space, clean and dirty utility areas, and a staff kitchen; and 10 external consultation offices.
Designers have prioritised patient comfort, recognising the high psychological impact of an oncology referral. Spaces will be "sensitive and empathetic" to patients' varying emotional states, with emphasis on privacy and the ability to be alone in each room. Most external consultations, located in the terrace extension, will have windows facing outdoors.
The tender's base budget is €1.579 million, though the final cost will depend on bids received. Officials view the project as essential for improving cancer care across the country.
