Key Points

  • Selection process for new psycho-oncologist completed successfully with strong applicants.
  • New hire to assist Dr. Laura Medina, addressing overload in palliative, psycho-oncology, and chronic care.
  • Hiring determined essential by SAAS Mental Health head Joan Soler and Internal Medicine chief Dr. Odile Sarroca.
  • 2026 budget pending but allows for additional mental health and addictions staff.

The Andorran Health Care Service (SAAS) plans to add a second psycho-oncologist to its Internal Medicine Service by late January or early February 2026, aiming to improve care for patients with chronic illnesses, those in palliative treatment, and individuals undergoing psycho-oncology support.

Joan Soler, head of SAAS's Mental Health and Addictions Service, outlined the plans in an interview with the Andorran News Agency (ANA) this week. He reported that the selection process has concluded successfully, attracting strong applications. Both the chosen candidate and other participants have received notification, with remaining steps—such as finalizing paperwork and signing the contract—expected to take a few weeks.

The new hire will support Dr. Laura Medina, who currently handles psycho-oncology duties alone. Soler highlighted the heavy workload in palliative care, psycho-oncology, and chronic disease management as the main reason for the addition. Working with Dr. Odile Sarroca, head of Internal Medicine, they determined that two specialists are essential to meet patient needs adequately.

Soler stressed the priority of ensuring proper care for these groups. Looking ahead to 2026, he noted that the still-pending budget allows for further hires in mental health and addictions roles. He expressed satisfaction at the prospect of bringing on more staff in diverse positions.
